Palm Sunday
It was approaching Passover: a time of great celebration where the Jews remembered their escape from captivity in Egypt. All of Jerusalem was buzzing at the memory of what God had done all those years ago. And then Jesus came riding into the city!
Maundy Thursday
When I say the words ‘The Last Supper’ the first thing that may come into your mind is Da Vinci’s fresco comprising the twelve disciples and Jesus, sitting at a table eating together. Of course, the standard joke is that Jesus walked into a restaurant and asked for a table for 26. We still wonder why he painted them all sat on the same side, even before social distancing! Celebrations and mealtimes have always been deeply ingrained into our culture and nature as human beings. Nothing has changed. Good Friday
Some of the greatest films that have ever been made tell the story of a hero that was prepared to risk all to save others: even if it meant sacrificing his or her own life in the process. Our own remembrance of those killed in conflict in World War Two recalls the words of Winston Churchill who said that “Never has so much, been owed by so many, to so few”. Easter Sunday
The banner we picked to put up outside the church, the same image at the top of this page, has the word ‘Hope’ on it. We all need hope right now! You would think that the Easter story ends with the death of Jesus on the cross. With an innocent man humiliated, killed and buried, and moreover not the promised deliverer Israel was expecting.
In any normal story that would be so…but this is no ordinary story.
